DESIGN FOR ADVERTISING

MEDIUM: CAMERA, ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR, PHOTOSHOP

THIS ADVERTISEMENT IS INSPIRED FROM UNICEF'S WATER ADVERTISEMENT. IN ONE OF OUR BTEC UNITS, WE TOOK AN ORIGINAL ADVERTISEMENT, AND MADE OUR OWN, USING MARKET RESEARCH, FONT RESEARCH AND EDITING WITH TECHNOLOGY.

FIRST, I DECIDED TO USE UNICEF'S WATER ADVERTISEMENT AS I REALLY LIKED THEIR ADVERTISEMENTS, BECAUSE OF THE EFFECTIVENESS AND THE IMPACT IT HAS TO THEIR AUDIENCE, AS WELL AS THE GENERAL PUBLIC. WATER IS A POPULAR ADVERTISEMENT TOPIC AS IT AFFECTS EVERY SINGLE PERSON AND IS A COMPULSORY RESOURCE THAT WE ALL NEED TO SURVIVE. 

I DREW OUT 12 DIFFERENT IDEAS RELATING TO THIS TOPIC, AND ASKED PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT AGES TO CHOOSE THEIR FAVOURITE AND WHAT MAKES IT SO EFFECTIVE. THE MAJORITY CHOSE THE IMAGE OF SOMEONE DRINKING OUT OF A CUP, FILLED WITH DIRTY WATER, WITH SOME TEXT THAT SAYS "would YOU drink this?". THE REASON BEHIND THIS WAS THAT IT WAS THE MOST VISUALLY IMPACTFUL.

WHEN PLANNING WHAT MY ADVERTISEMENT WOULD LOOK LIKE, I THOUGHT THAT USING A TEENAGE GIRL FOR THIS WOULD BE THE BEST OPTION AS IT IS AN EFFECTIVE WAY OF PURSUADING THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO TAKE ACTION, SINCE THE MORE LIKELY GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT WOULD TAKE ACTION WOULD BE ADULTS. PHOTOGRAPHY WAS A MEDIUM THAT I WANTED TO USE AS I KNEW I COULD EDIT IT EASILY USING DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES.

I LOOKED THROUGH 12 DIFFERENT FONTS AND PUT THEM ALL IN THE SAME PLACE OF THE ADVERTISEMENT TO COMPARE, SHORTLISTED THEM AND FINALLY, DECIDED TO USE "TOX TYPEWRITER". I CHOSE THIS FONT AS IT MADE THE MESSAGE BEHIND THIS ADVERTISEMENT STAND OUT EVEN MORE. THE COLOUR CHOICE, USING WHITE FONT WITH BLACK BORDERS MADE THE MESSAGE OF THIS ADVERTISEMENT IMPORTANT AND SERIOUS, AND ALSO STANDS OUT VERY WELL.

FINALLY, WITH THE EDITING, I FIRST PLAYED AROUND WITH THE SATURATION, HUE, BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST AND MORE, BEFORE ADDING THE MAIN TEXT, AND AFTER ADDING TEXT, I DECIDED TO GET INSPIRATION FROM ONE OF THE PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT I RESEARCHED ON 'EDWARD HONAKER" SINCE HE ADDED EFFECTS ON HIS IMAGES SUCH AS DISTORTION, BLUR, AND MORE. THIS IS TO INCREASE THE IMPACT ON THE MESSAGE THAT IS TAKEN FROM THE PHOTO, AND MY IMAGE'S MESSAGE BEING THAT PEOPLE THAT HAVE TO LIVE WITH DIRTY WATER, WITH A LACK OF CLEAN WATER HAVE A DISTORTION IN THEIR LIFE THAT WE DO NOT RELATE TO. ON PHOTOSHOP, I EXPERIEMENTED WITH DIFFERENT EFFECTS, SUCH AS BLUR, DISTORTION, RIPPLE, ETC. BUT I DECIDED THAT THE RIPPLE EFFECT WAS THE PERFECT ONE.

I DECIDED TO DISPLAY THIS AS ADVERTISING IS AN ELEMENT OF ART AND DESIGN, SPECIFICALLY GRAPHIC DESIGN THAT I AM INTERESTED IN BECAUSE YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN CREATIVITY TO CREATE SOMETHING UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT.
